The Postgraduate College Mardan

The foundation stone of Mardan College was laid on 14 December 1952 by Khwaja Shahab ud Din, the Governor of North West Frontier Province. In the beginning it was an Intermediate college and was named Akbar Memorial College. The name was after the wealthy family in Hoti who agreed to provide free land to the college. Later on it became a Degree college and was called Government College Mardan following payment to the family for the land.

In those days there were not many colleges in the surrounding areas and the college attracted many students from the villages. The catchment's area included Swabi, Rustam, Buner, Loondkhwar, Shergarh, Toru, Katlung, Parts of Charsadda, Rashkai and Risalpur. The traveling was not easy and students used to stay in hostels. At least there were 3 hostels for the students.

Mardan has remained the centre of culture, literature and politics. The college provided the opportunity for the students to flourish in various fields of life. Besides curricular activities, there were Stage dramas, Mushairas (poetry) and debates. Pushto Adabi Tolana, Progressive Literary Society and Students Unions played an important role. Sports activities were at the top.

Many well known teachers were posted here. Anwar Baig Barlas, Athar Zubairi , Tahir Farooqi , Hafiz Idrees, Saeed Akhtar , Shahenshah Wali Khan, Rogh Lewaney, Muhammad Anwar, Aurangzeb , Faiz Muhammad Khan, Shaukat Daar , Shoukat Wasti , Moosa Kaleem and Afzal Raza are still in the memories of the local people. They are much appreciated for their hard work and their commitment to the spread of education in the area.

Mardan College has produced many talented students who are now spread all over the world and throughout the country. The College is now a Postgraduate College and has a good academic record. However this is not enough for the people of Mardan. The students travel to other districts and provinces to get professional education. A Standard University in Mardan is the top priority otherwise the people of this area will be left behind in the education.

Unfortunately the authorities and the politicians do not have the vision to appreciate this demand of the people of Mardan. Perhaps they think education is not an important issue. Or perhaps they have left this to the students who qualified from Mardan College to come forward and join hands in the struggle for the establishment of a World Standard University in Mardan.

Comments:         The name of professor Rashid Ahmad has been totaly forgotten. He was a well known scholar of the province and his services for Mardan college can not be ignored. He bought the land from Nawabs for the college. He remained the principal of the college then director educatin and then secretary education of NWFP....Kashif

Mardan Engineering Campus

As a result of our growth in the last few years, students from Mardan were offered an admission in other regions of NWFP. Mardan Campus was inaugurated in 2002 with a spirit to bring engineering education to people at their door steps.
The campus is spread over an area of more than 22 acres, including a covered area of 190,000 sqft.It consists of an administration block, academic blocks, recreation centre, students and faculty housing.
Two engineering undergraduate programmes are offerred that include Telecommunication Engineering and Computer Software Engineering. All the laboratories have recently been strengthened with the latest cutting-edge equipment. The ever increasing number of applications demonstrates that students find the programmes credible and useful.

I come from a small village near Mardan. Have Ph.D. in Chemistry and am working as a senior scientist in a prestigious chemical company in USA for the last 25 years. At the end of October 2009, I visited Mardan and was impressed with the progress made such as establishment of Mardan University, Medical College and proposed circular road around Mardan. We may agree or disagree with National Awami Party manifesto but we should acknowledge the fact that our young Chief Minister from Mardan is doing a great job and I salute him for his efforts. I'll be glade to volunteer my time for seminars/lectures in chemistry at Mardan University.
