Jalala Village

Arif Hayat Gul and S A Ali

The beautiful village Jalala is situated about 20 km north from Mardan. The Malakand Road goes through the village linking the Swat Valley to Mardan and Peshawar.

Jalala is named after two brothers Jalal Khan and Kamal Khan. At the time of British Empire , there was a long bazaar and Hindus ,Muslims and Sikhs shopkeepers were living side by side. There was a large Hindu community living peacefully in Jalala. Before 1947 Sir Sultan Karam Khan, one of the landlords of Jalala was the in charge of Jalala village and the village was under the control of Takht Bahi Police Station.

Jalala once faced shortage of drinking water and the women were forced to bring water in clay pots from the near by river. One particular secton of the river was very busy and was popularly called "The Khazo Gudar" which means river for women in Pushto language. The timings  of bringing water were early morning and before sunset.

For this reason Jalala gained popularity in Pushto Poetry. The famous song about Jalala Gudar was played frequently from Peshawar Radio Station."Da Jalala Oba Khwagey dee ...Da Kalee Peghley Tre Mangee Radakaveena , Da Jalala”

Another song is “Da Jalala Gudara wran shey. ...Pa Jeenako de Saa Landey olagawona”.

There is also a famous Pushto Saying (Matal) , "Kor de da Jalala Jumaat Sha”. This is after all the people of Jalala left for their fields in Madey Baba and there was nobody to look after a small mosque. After a short time the mosque collapsed completely because of long Monsoon rains.
